There are two main forms of recycling. Traditional recycling includes all of your common recyclables and electronic recycling includes all of the devices that run on batteries or that plug into a wall. When it comes to traditional recycling, these are items like paper, plastic, cardboard, glass, and other items that can be used in other products. Electronic recycling is a bit more tricky as many of the components can be re-used but not in the same ways as traditional items.

When you recycling paper, cardboard, or plastic, there is a process that these items go through before they can be used in new products. Once it makes its way to the facility, the items are sorted into groups and cleaned. Once they are clean, they then get ground and processed to be sent off to be reused in new products.

When you recycle electronics like a smartphone, a computer, or a television, the process for recycling is slightly different and more complex. For starters, devices have a storage device such as a hard drive in them which needs to be wiped and all of the data on them is deleted or destroyed. Once everything has been removed from the device, it can be tested to see how it works and what the condition of the item is. If the item is working as it should be, it is then cleaned and ready to be shared with someone new to provide it a second life. If the item is not working or has broken components, the job gets a little more involved. The broken components are removed and if they are replaceable, they will be replaced with working ones to get the device to a good working condition. If the components cannot be replaced, the working pieces are taken out and set aside for parts and pieces for future devices that need them. When it comes to electronic recycling, the goal is to keep as much of the good as possible and reduce the amount of waste as much as possible.

Some electronic items that can be recycled include:

  • Cell phones
  • Computers
  • Tablets
  • Game consoles
  • Laptops
  • Printers
  • Televisions
  • And more!

We have also recently started taking vape devices and accessories like mods, tanks, batteries, coils/atomizers, and all things vape-related.

At Summit E-Waste, we are an electronic recycling center that serves the community as a place to drop off old electronics that have been sitting in the closet or basement for years. We ensure that any data on these devices is removed and destroyed before doing anything with them. If you want to see the process of your data being destroyed, just ask, and would be happy to show you!

If you are a business in the Northeast Ohio region and are in need of recycling services, we would be happy to schedule a pickup from your location and make things easier on your end. We can even bring our truck and destroy hard drives and storage devices right there at your location.

Our goal is to keep as much out of the landfills and waste dropoffs as possible by recycling and finding new homes for old electronics and devices.
